My Key (to the Heart) opens the musical rhythm and romance of weddings as eight bridal looks modulate from contemporary-traditional to nouveau.
The vibe of EDM, electronic dance music, provided inspiration through its electric, free-flowing euphoria juxtaposed with geometric repetition. Likewise, in the bridal collection, tension plays between the geometric and the organic, as ethereal silhouettes with geometric patterns on the lace are interrupted by organic shapes.
Initial Design Developments
With my inspiration in mind, I began searching small shops in the Garment District for net fabrics, geometric laces, organic shapes, vines, floral laces, and fabrics that changed colors when light reflected.
From here, I narrowed down my fabrics and my sketches. I went back to the Garment District and bought small yardage of some of the narrowed down fabrics and found additional fabrics that emanated my theme.
When I found this additional fabric, it checked every box I was looking for in fabric. It combined the geometric lines of the EDM lights with the organic circles, the repeat in pattern like the repetition of sounds in an EDM song, and the iridescent sequins that change color depending on the light.
I began draping with those purchased fabrics. As I now had a clearer idea of my final 8 designs, I started to focus specifically on each look and resketching based on the way the fabric behaved. I further sketched each design to achieve a variety between the design elements and silhouettes and usage of fabrics to give a range of looks, all while trying to make all 8 bridal gowns cohesive.
